I plan to get a Chord Hugo and I can't wait to listen to my FLAC lossless music albums with it at the end of this year. FLAC audio files sound awesome! J River Media Center is a cutting edge and state of the art media center with tons of advanced features and options. It is well worth the low price of around $50.00 USD. This is one of the best media centers currently available for Microsoft Windows users and I'm happy that I bought it. The mid range is not changed much, but it is more holographic and three dimensional using J River Media Center. ![]() ![]() The music is more precise, crisper, and the treble and bass are well extended. When I imported them into J River Media Center 20, I definitely heard improvements in sound quality. I store them on a new Seagate Backup Plus FAST 4.0 TB USB 3.0 portable hard disk drive along with my 46 high resolution FLAC lossless music albums. I recently made the decision to re-rip and encode my large CD collection to FLAC using Illustrate's dBPowerAMP 15 Reference + Perfect Tunes. Now, when an digital file calls for the best sound available to me, I'll be using J River.ĭoes it ever stop? The variety of ways we can reproduce sound in our homes, that is. I've always looked at iTunes as a digital cassette recorder anyway, having grown up in the 60s and 70s where I recorded many, many wasn't a better sound than vinyl but it was the next best affordable thing. I'll keep using iTunes, but mostly for loading my iPod Classic. ![]() And it's pretty to look at which brings me a more involved listening session. In addition, with the large screen of my laptop and the correct display setting I know what's playing from across the room. Is that the main advantage to FLAC files? Is that what I'm supposed to hear? I've A-B'd both in my system and I seem to be hearing more definition in my music.especially more air in the highs without the sizzle. I know I'm late to the game but I am convinced of the better quality sound of my J River and FLAC setup when compared to iTunes and Apple Lossless. Running from a Compaq notebook and Win7 through a Grant Fidelity TubeDAC. OK, so I've been using J River 19 for a couple of weeks now. J River Media Center will make it shine brightly. It's definitely going to be much more of a high end audio product than my CEntrance product. I can't wait until I save up enough money to finally make a decision about which integrated DAC and headphone amplifier audio component that I will purchase this holiday season. This is apparent even with low bitrate MP3s! Amazing! Calloway's intended sound for her Slow album. At lower volumes, this combination gets me much closer to Ms. This is a reference grade audiophile approved media center that has a strong emphasis on bit-perfect audio playback with the right audio components downstream. Now, I understand the hype behind J River Media Center. I loved that sound for 10 years, but it was time to move on. It's also got a very analogue and tube amplifier sonic signature that was very seductive, but it was not accurate. It sweetens female vocalists and there's a mid bass emphasis. I'm used to my Resolution Audio Opus 21 and Ray Samuels Audio Emmeline HR-2 that had some noticeable sonic colorations. It has a level of portable reference grade sonic signature that is very transparent. Yet, it draws me into the music by getting out of the way. It sounds like a flat reproduction of the music. At first blush, it doesn't sound too special. I'm using the CEntrance ASIO device driver for Microsoft Windows 8.1 Professional with Media Center Update 1 64 bit. Listening to my Sennheiser HD-800 headphones, it's quite neutral and accurate with a natural sound that has no tonal imbalances. ![]() This portable combination tells the truth, but not the whole truth at this price point. I just got my new CEntrance Hi-Fi M8 LX XL4 portable DAC and headphone amplifier and I'm listening to Ann Hampton Calloway's Slow using Fraunhofer 320 kbps CBR joint stereo MP3 music album and it's extremely clean. I really do like J River Media Center 20 64 bit. We used to offer a free demo version of Highland, but it confused users more than it helped. While it’s not a huge moneymaker, 1 it serves a crucial need for screenwriters. My company created Highland because I needed it. It’s not something Highland is going to be able to fix. ![]() It’s because of the odd PDF-building code Fade In uses. PDFs created by Fade In don’t convert well. However, many screenwriters report success running PDFs through optical character recognition software like Prizmo 2 first. You may come across these kinds of PDFs when dealing with scanned paper scripts. If a PDF is really just a stack of images, there’s no text to suck out. From there, you can edit it right there in Highland, or export it to Final Draft.Ĭan Highland convert every PDF to Final Draft? No. Highland sucks out the text and does all the reformating. It’s actually a full-on screenwriting app, but its ability to melt down PDFs was its original claim to fame, and is still unrivaled. ![]() Highland is a paid app in the Mac App Store. Hell, if you have a mortal enemy who has a Mac, it’s worth kissing up to him for the five minutes this will take. If you have a Mac, or a friend who has a Mac, this is your best choice. So while it’s generally an improvement over copy-and-paste, you’d still need to spend quite a bit of time getting a useful script out of this workflow Use Highland ![]() I had similar results with all the PDFs I tried. The script also swelled from 114 to 343 pages. Elements were more likely to be recognized correctly, but line breaks and spacing glitches were daunting. In my testing, it’s only a little better than copy-and-paste. Here’s a screencast to show you this workflow: If you paste it into Final Draft, you’ll end up with a mess that will take quite a bit of work (and time) to sort out. Most PDFs these days have selectable text, so there’s a good chance you’ll be able to copy the text out. In Acrobat or Preview, you can select the text. You see the text, but it’s really an image. Some PDFs are essentially photos of pages. But in these cases, I think you’re better off putting the old script aside and starting at page one. The only scenario in which I can envision retyping a script is if it’s so bad you really do want to rewrite it scene by scene. ![]() Spellcheck will catch some typos, but words will get omitted. If you pay someone to do it, it’s expensive. This is the worst option, but back in the days of paper scripts, it was the only option. Update: The folks at Final Draft emailed me to suggest an additional workflow, which I’ll detail after the section on copy-and-paste. Copy and Paste and Reformat every line. There are basically three ways to convert from a PDF to Final Draft: Among my working screenwriter friends, it’s one of the questions I get most. Now it’s been scanned to a PDF - but that still doesn’t get you a script you can edit. You’ve been hired to rewrite a project, but the producers only have a PDF of the script.Your hard drive crashed, and the only copy of your screenplay is an old PDF you sent to a friend.Screenwriters often find themselves with PDF of a screenplay when what they actually need a Final Draft (.fdx) file that they can edit. ![]() Red tide algae make potent natural toxins. What if I have 10 million? That's why things like that bother me. I do a lot if image processing in my day job, for example, that can't be automated only because nobody smart with programming has sat down and figured it out, because the demand for it isn't there. I get twitchy when I have to do something manually with a computer because I'm old enough to remember when computers were touted as machines that would do menial, repetitive tasks for us, and somewhere along the line that stopped happening and a lot of people are okay with that. That might be enough for me but if I have to open the app by hand and go into a menu and find a playlist and click refresh every day, forget it. I saw something while fumbling through the options last night somewhere that said "refresh when opening app" or something but now I forget where it is. (Even though, in principle, the devs should remove this limitation at some point.) Could you walk me through how to set that up? If that's the only problem I end up having with Plexamp I could see myself being okay with it. For the playlists I'm concerned about, they're "My Top Rated" sort of playlists that I only ever shuffle, so that might actually be okay. Since you're actually treating me like a person with feelings and agency, I'll ask you: someone else mentioned I can make a playlist that exceeds 24 hours in length and every time I "sync" it, or whatever Plex calls it, it syncs a different 24 hours of music selected at random so that you always get a fresh set of stuff. I appreciate you taking the time to actually answer my question instead of X/Y probleming me or saying i DoNt KnOw WhY yOuRe So AnGrY (I'm angry because I've been trying to find a way to do this without Plexamp for several years, yesterday I gave up and said screw it, I'll pay for Plexamp and now there are these stupid, arbitrary roadblocks and privileged Europeans with symmetrical gigabit and unlimited mobile data pretending not to know what the issue is). So is this thing that’s been touted as the great iTunes replacement for so long really not all it’s cracked up to be? I’d rather get out now if that’s the case and not waste my time fighting with it. And no, I don’t have unlimited data on my phone and I’m not going to VPN back home to stream the music from my server, that’s stupid. Like others I have large “five stars” and “top rated” playlists that exceed 24 hours of music that I shuffle through while away from home. ![]() I thought I’d just transfer my playlists over. I’d rather not maintain a large music collection in two places so I was thinking about moving my iTunes library to Plex and using Plexamp as a replacement player on my computers and my phone.īut I guess I can’t, since I’m seeing a bunch of posts about how Plexamp has arbitrarily limitations on how many songs can be synced to my phone. What Apple used to call iTunes and now calls Music (not their service Apple Music, they just renamed the app) has become a bloated piece of garbage. I bought a month of PlexPass last night so I could evaluate Plexamp. I really prefer not having to create a profile for every single thing I'm running. So if anyone has some decent knowledge with DS4Windows, I would love their help to get this working properly. This isn't what I want, I want to be able to bounce between using the controller natively and using DS4Windows automatically. I keep running into problems where the "temporarily shut off DS4Windows" method will shut the controller off completely, lights and all, and I can't reconnect unless I turn DS4Windows back on. The short version is, I haven't found the easiest way to have DS4Windows turn on/use a specific profile when launching a specific program, and then temporarily turn off when I'm running a program that uses the PS5 controller natively. In Steam's case, there's this whole workaround you have to do in order to pull that off, and yet that same workaround doesn't seem to work with other programs. Ideally, I would want DS4Windows to automatically shut off when I'm running something that supports the PS5 controller natively, like Steam. At least for me, the biggest issue is getting the program to seamlessly switch on and off on its own, or load up the right profile in-between programs. When you're emulating Wii or Wii U, the gyro aiming is actually more precise than the actual Wiimote and doesn't require you to hook up any sensor bars or anything.īut as is the case with nearly every PC-related thing out there, DS4Windows is a pain in the ass to set up. When all is said and done, you'll have no choice but to use DS4Windows.Īnd when it works, it works great: every Xbox PC game works perfectly, rumble included. In this case, your other best alternative is using Playnite, which is a more barebones but still working launcher that can add Xbox games as well as Steam, Origin, EA and whatever hundred other services are out there.īut even THIS comes with the caveat that both the Playnite launcher and Xbox games won't recognize the PS5 controller. Xbox PC games are a big offender, usually requiring you to launch them through their own Xbox launcher. Unfortunately, not every non-Steam game will play nice with Steam, even if you set them as non-Steam shortcuts. It's fantastic and, more importantly, it's easy. You can also map button toggles and even desktop keys. Visual Novels are a piece of cake when you've got the mouse mapped to either the left analog or touchpad (or both, even). ![]() Steam has controller profiles for nearly everything, including the PS5 controller, and gives you a whole heap of customizable features right out of the gate, including the ability to create separate controller profiles for each game. Unfortunately, not every game or program will natively support the controller, in which case you have two options: the first, and honestly best option, is using Steam. If you play a whole bunch of different types of PC games, including emulation, there's nothing this controller can't fulfill. Preferences aside on how the controller feels or its buttons, there's no denying the added benefits of using the touchscreen like a virtual mouse or gyro aiming for motion controls. I don't want things to turn into a debate about kb/m vs controllers for PC gaming, so to get it out of the way: IF you're someone who prefers to use a controller for PC gaming whenever possible, I really can't recommend enough using a PS5 controller (or even PS4). I could write a book about the love/hate relationship I have with DS4Windows, but I'll make a thread instead. ![]() ![]() ![]() Would be great if any devs reading would consider giving us some way to have music visualizations (ideally full screen, text-free visualizations) in a Samsung smart TV app. However, once finished, you’ll be able to use a.
